The Sacred Heart

"Behold this Heart which has so loved men!"

(Words of Jesus to St. Margaret Mary)

"The Blessed Sacrament is . . . the living heart of each of our churches."
(Pope Paul VI)

"We come here to meet the Heart of Jesus pierced for us, from which water and blood gush. It is the redeeming love, which is at the origin of salvation, of our salvation, which is at the origin of the Church. Now still, today, the living Christ loves us and presents his heart to us as the source of our redemption... We are called not only to meditate and contemplate on this mystery of Christ's love; we are called to take part in it. It is the mystery of the Holy Eucharist, the center of our faith, the center of our worship of Christ's merciful love manifested in his Sacred Heart, a mystery which is adored here night and day. In the Holy Eucharist--this is also the meaning of perpetual adoration--we enter the movement of love from which all interior progress and all apostolate efficacy springs." (From Our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II's address at the Basilica of Montmartre in 1980, where he spoke of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament Who has been perpetually adored there for more than one hundred years.)

The Sacred Heart of Jesus feast and devotion was established as a result of Jesus Himself appearing to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque and requesting it. This day again leads us to Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament where He continues to manifest His tremendous Love, Mercy and Compassion for all of humankind. The messages that Our Lord gave were primarily centered on His Most Blessed Sacrament.

In His apparitions to St. Margaret Mary Jesus gave her three reasons why He wanted the feast of His Sacred Heart established:

  1. In order that the faithful should return thanks to Him for the great gift which he has left them in the Adorable Eucharist.
  2. In order that loving souls should make amends by their prayers and pious affections for the irreverences and insults which He has received and still receives from sinners in this Most Holy Sacrament.
  3. In order that they might make up also for the honor which he does not receive in so many churches where he is so little adored and reverenced.

Jesus promised that He would make the riches of His Sacred Heart abound towards those who should render Him this honor, both on the day of this feast, and on every other day when they should visit Him in The Most Holy Sacrament.

The Twelve Promises of the Sacred Heart to St. Margaret Mary

  1. I will give them all the graces necessary for their state of life.
  2. I will give peace in their families.
  3. I will console them in all their troubles.
  4. They shall find in My Heart an assured refuge during life and especially at the hour of death.
  5. I will pour abundant blessings on all their undertakings.
  6. Sinners shall find in My Heart the source and infinite ocean of mercy.
  7. Tepid souls shall become fervent.
  8. Fervent souls shall speedily rise to great perfection.
  9. I will bless the homes in which the image of My Sacred Heart shall be exposed and honored.
  10. I will give to priests the power to touch the most hardened hearts.
  11. Those who propagate this devotion shall have their name written in My Heart, and it shall never be effaced.
  12. The all-powerful love of My Heart will grant to all those who shall receive Communion on the First Friday of nine consecutive months the grace of final repentance; they shall not die under My displeasure, nor without receiving their Sacraments; My Heart shall be their assured refuge at that last hour.

"And He showed me that it was His great desire of being loved by men and of withdrawing them from the path of ruin into which Satan hurls such crowds of them, that made Him form the design of manifesting His Heart to men, with all the treasures of love, of mercy, of grace, of sanctification and salvation which It contains, in order that those who desire to render Him and procure for Him all the honour and love possible, might themselves be abundantly enriched with those divine treasures of which this Heart is the source. He should be honored under the figure of this Heart of flesh, and Its image should be exposed ... He promised me that wherever this image should be exposed with a view to showing It special honour, He would pour forth His blessings and graces. This devotion was the last effort of His love that He would grant to men in these latter ages, in order to withdraw them from the empire of Satan which He desired to destroy, and thus to introduce them into the sweet liberty of the rule of His love, which He wished to restore in the hearts of all those who should embrace this devotion." (St. Margaret Mary)

Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is here waiting for us with Open Arms of Love!

Consecration of the Human Race to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

(Ordered by His Holiness, Pope Pius XI, Dec. 11, 1925. For One Fold and One Shepherd.)

Most Sweet Jesus, Redeemer of the human race, look down upon us humbly prostrate before Thee. We are Thine and Thine we wish to be; but to be more surely united with Thee, behold each one of us freely consecrates himself today to Thy Most Sacred Heart.

Many indeed have never known Thee; many, too, despising Thy precepts, have rejected Thee. Have mercy on them all, most merciful Jesus, and draw them to Thy Sacred Heart. Be Thou King, O Lord, not only of the faithful who have never forsaken Thee, but also of the prodigal children who have abandoned Thee. Grant that they may quickly return to their Father's house lest they die of wretchedness and hunger.

Be Thou King of those who are deceived by erroneous opinions, or whom discord keeps aloof, and call them back to the harbor of truth and unity of faith, so that soon there may be but one flock and one Shepherd.

Grant, O Lord, to Thy Church, assurance of freedom and immunity from harm; give peace and order to all nations, and make the earth resound, from pole to pole with one cry: Praise to thy Divine Heart that wrought our salvation; to It be glory and honor forever. Amen.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, Thy Kingdom Come!

"O most sacred, most loving heart of Jesus, thou art concealed in the Holy Eucharist, and thou beatest for us still.... Thou art the heart of the Most High made man.... Thy Sacred Heart is the instrument and organ of Thy love. It did beat for us. It yearned for us. It ached for our salvation. It was on fire through zeal, that the glory of God might be manifested in and by us.... In worshipping thee I worship my incarnate God, my Emmanuel." (John Henry Cardinal Newman)

The Sacred Heart

by Bougaud

It was on June 16, 1675, that the last of the grand revelations relative to the Sacred Heart took place. It was to close the cycle of those solemn disclosures. Until then the humble virgin had received from the Lord only personal favors, very like those with which other holy souls had already been favored. He had only demanded of her some individual practices of devotion. Now however, the hour was come for Him to invest her with her grand, public mission.

During the octave of the feast of the Blessed Sacrament, June 16, 1675, Margaret Mary was on her knees before the choir-gate, her eyes fixed on the tabernacle. She had just received "some of the unmeasured graces of His love". We have no particulars of these graces.

Suddenly the Lord appeared on the altar and discovered [revealed] to her His Heart:

"Behold", said He to her, "this Heart which has so loved men that it has spared nothing,
even to exhausting and consuming itself, in order to testify its love. In return, I receive
from the greater part only ingratitude, by their irreverence and sacrilege, and by the
coldness and contempt they have for Me in this sacrament of love. And what is most
painful to Me," added the Savior, in a tone that went to the Sister's heart, "is that they are
hearts consecrated to Me."

Then He commanded her to have established in the Church a particular feast to honor His Sacred Heart. "It is for this reason I ask thee that the first Friday after the octave of the Blessed Sacrament be appropriated to a special feast, to honor My Heart by communicating on that day, and making reparation for the indignity that it has received. And I promise that My Heart shall dilate to pour out abundantly the influences of its love on all that will render it this honor or procure its being rendered."

"Love keeps Him there [in the Blessed Sacrament] as a victim completely and perpetually delivered over to sacrifice for the glory of the Father and for our salvation. Unite yourself with Him, then, in all that you do. Refer everything to His glory. Set up your abode in this loving Heart of Jesus and you will there find lasting peace and the strength both to bring to fruition all the good desires He inspires in you, and to avoid every deliberate fault. Place in this Heart all your sufferings and difficulties. Everything that comes from the Sacred Heart is sweet. He changes everything into love." (St. Margaret Mary)

"To know the charity of Jesus Christ, to be filled with the fullness of it, that is the reign of God in man. And that reign is the fruit of devotion to the Heart of Jesus, living — and loving us — in the Most Blessed Sacrament. This devotion is the sovereign worship of love. It is the soul and center of all religion; for religion is merely the law, the virtue, and the perfection of love; and the Sacred Heart is the grace, the model, and the life of it. Let us study this love close to the fire where it consumes itself for us.

"Devotion to the Sacred Heart has a twofold object: it honors first with adoration and public worship the Heart of flesh of Jesus Christ, and secondly the infinite love with which this Heart has burned for us since its creation, and with which it is still consumed in the Sacrament of our altars." (St. Peter Julian Eymard)

Standing up for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament today is the same as standing at the foot of the Cross 2,000 years ago.

"To keep me from sin and straying from Him, God has used devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. My life vows destined to be spent in the light irradiating from the tabernacle, and it is to the Heart of Jesus that I dare go for the solution of all my problems" (Pope John XXIII).

Corpus Christi: God's Feast Day

Corpus Christi, the Body of Christ, is the only feast day dedicated exclusively to honoring the true and living presence of God among us! Scripture tells us in John 1:14 "The word became flesh and dwelt among us". Later in John 6:51 Jesus tells us "I Myself Am the Living Bread come down from heaven". Corpus Christi is a feast of great rejoicing, a day of receiving and remembering our Lord Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. The best way to celebrate this wondrous gift to us is by participating in Holy Mass, receiving Jesus in Holy Communion, and Adoring Him in the Most Blessed Sacrament. By being truly present to Him in Holy Communion with an open heart and spirit we can really commune with Him, look at Him, talk to Him, listen to Him and His inspirations, and feel His presence. It is the perfect opportunity to remember Jesus' constant and continual presence in the tabernacles of our churches where He always waits for us and beckons " Could you not watch one hour with Me?" (Mt 26:40) Many churches throughout our world customarily have Eucharistic Adoration on this great feast day where Jesus, in the Sacred Host, is placed upon the altar inside a monstrance, where we can gaze upon Him 'face to face' and have a 'heart to heart' talk with Him. Many parishes have Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration where we can look upon Jesus 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year round. John 6:40 tells us "Indeed, this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks upon the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life. Him I will raise up on the last day."

The Second Vatican Council and all the Popes of this century have frequently stated very emphatically that "the Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith as Catholics." Our Eucharistic Lord is the greatest treasure of our faith. Why? Because it is really Him present in the Eucharist Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity! Though we can see Him only through the eyes of faith, we can see and experience the results of His true presence both interiorly and exteriorly. When we receive our Eucharistic Jesus in Holy Communion we are reformed, transformed and strengthened. We are reformed into true Christian disciples, transformed into His image and strengthened and nourished for our daily walk with Him. We are fed by Jesus in the Sacred Host, He is our "Soul Food". Just as our bodies need food for energy, so do our souls lest we grow weary from spiritual starvation. We need Jesus in the Eucharist for our very survival and revival. When we receive and spend time in the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist we are energized and empowered to love and serve God and others. The same Jesus who once walked our earth continues his ministry of love and healing, repairing and restoring, in His Holy Eucharist. He continues to heal bodies, minds and souls as He once did. In Matthew 28:30 these were the words of our resurrected and living Lord just before His ascension into heaven, "Know that I am with you always until the end of the world". Countless numbers of healings have taken place and continue to take place, which are considered Eucharistic miracles. Many people have experienced physical healings, healings of addictions, memories and emotional problems, healings of relationships and so much more. Many have obtained these healings for others through intercessory prayer, offering their Holy Communions for others and interceding for others in their Holy Hours of Adoration before Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament—Who is our Divine Physician. He tells us "Come To Me all of you who are weary and find life burdensome and I will refresh you." "Cast all of your anxieties upon the Lord, who cares for you." (Mt 11:28; 1 Pt 5:7)

We need never be afraid to go directly to Jesus in the Eucharist, nor need we be fearful of sending others to Him. In John 6:37, Jesus tells us "no one who comes will I ever reject". Jesus stays with us out of His unfathomable love for us. He remains in the tabernacles of our churches in a small piece of bread, a prisoner of love, because of His awesome and mysterious love for us. Jesus wants us to be happy with Him for eternity. In John 6:54, Jesus says "He who feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. Just as the Father who has life sent me and I have life because of the Father so the man who feeds on me will have life because of me."

In this intensely Eucharistic year 2000, let us respond to our Holy Father's great desire which he voiced in his homily at the 45th International Eucharistic Congress in Seville, Spain, in June 1993. "I hope that this form of Perpetual Adoration, with permanent exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will continue into the future. Specifically, I hope that the fruit of this congress results in the establishment of Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration in all parishes and Christian communities throughout the world."

Pope John Paul II told the world, from St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, "The best the surest and the most effective way of establishing everlasting peace on the face of the earth is through the great power of Perpetual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament." When Jesus reigns as King, through Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration, in every parish throughout the world-then every day will be God's feast day! When this great day comes then He, The Prince of Peace, will bring true Peace. For He tells us in 2 Chronicles 7:14 "When My people humble themselves and seek My Presence...I will revive their land." "Behold I come to make all things new!" (Rev 21:5)

"You heard me, only Friend whom I love.
To ravish my heart, you became man.
You shed your blood, what a supreme mystery!...
And you still live for me on the Altar.
If I cannot see the brilliance of your Face
Or hear your sweet voice,
O my God, I can live by your grace,
I can rest on your Sacred Heart!"

by St. Therese of Lisieux, The Little Flower)

Prayers to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament

Jesus, my God, I bow down in lowliest adoration before You, down to the depths of my utter nothingness, and from that depth I raise my eyes in humble supplication to Your Sacred Heart, imploring Your mercy and forgiveness for my many sins. Give me grace to spend this hour of loving reparation with all the holy dispositions You desire. Come into my poor heart Yourself, dear Lord, and work out Your pleasure in it, directing my faculties, sense and powers to Your greater honor and glory. Would that I might console You for all the wrongs Your loving Heart receives from the ingratitude of men.

Mary, my dearest Mother, and you, O great St. Joseph, lend me all the love of your hearts, and the love of all the angels and saints with which to love my Jesus. Teach me to pray, to love, to repair, to adore the loving, wronged Heart of Jesus hidden in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar.

Spiritual Communion

St. Alphonsus Liguori

My Jesus, I believe that Thou art present in the most Holy Sacrament. I love Thee above all things, and I desire to receive Thee into my soul. Since I cannot now receive Thee sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace Thee as if Thou wert already there, and unite myself wholly to Thee; never permit me to be separated from Thee.

Prayer of Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
and the Immaculate Heart of Mary

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, truly present in the Holy Eucharist, I consecrate my body and soul to be entirely one with your heart, being sacrificed at every instant on all the altars of the world and giving praise to the Father, pleading for the coming of His kingdom.

Please receive this humble offering of myself. Use me as you will for the glory of the Father and the salvation of souls.

Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, and tender Mother of all people, I consecrate myself to your Immaculate Heart, and recommend to you my family, my country, and the whole human race.

Please accept my consecration, dearest Mother, and use me as you wish, to accomplish your designs upon the world.

O Immaculate Heart of Mary, Queen of Heaven and earth, rule over me, and teach me how to allow the Heart of Jesus to rule and triumph in me and around me, as it has ruled and triumphed in you. Amen.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, Immaculate Heart of Mary, protect us!

Prayer to the Blessed Sacrament

St. Alphonsus Liguori

My Lord Jesus Christ, it is Thy great love for men that keeps Thee day and night in this Sacrament, full of pity and love, expecting, inviting, and welcoming all who visit Thee. I believe that Thou art really present in the Sacrament of the Altar. From the depth of my nothingness,
I adore Thee; and I thank Thee for the many graces Thou hast given me, especially for the gift of Thyself in this Sacrament, for the gift of Thy most holy Mother as my intercessor, and for the privilege of visiting Thee in this Church.

I now speak to Thy most loving Heart with a three-fold intention: to thank Thee for the great gift of Thyself; to atone for all the insults which Thy enemies heap upon Thee in this Sacrament; and to adore Thee wherever Thy Eucharistic Presence is dishonored or forgotten.

My Jesus, I love Thee with my whole heart. I am very sorry for my ingratitude to Thy infinite goodness. I now resolve with the help of Thy grace, never to offend Thee again. And, sinful as I am, I consecrate to Thee my entire self, my whole will, my affections, my desires, and all that I have. From now on, do with me and mine as Thou pleasest. I ask for and desire only Thy love, final perseverance, and the grace always to do Thy holy will.

I intercede with Thee for the souls in purgatory, especially for those who were most devoted to the Blessed Sacrament, and to Thy most holy Mother. I recommend to Thee also, all poor sinners. And lastly, my dear Savior, I unite all my desires with the desires of Thy most loving Heart. Thus united, I present them to Thy Eternal Father, and beg Him in Thy Name and for love of Thee, to hear and answer them.

Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make our hearts like unto Thine.

Prayer to the Sacred Heart

Heart of Jesus, all holy! Fountain of all blessings, I adore you, I love you, and with a lively sorrow for my sins, I offer you this poor heart of mine. Make me humble, patient, pure and entirely obedient to your will.

Good Jesus, grant that I may live in you and for you. Protect me in the midst of danger; comfort me in my afflictions; give me health of body, assistance in my temporal needs, your blessings on all that I do, and the grace of a holy death.

Heart of Jesus, burning with love for us, inflame our hearts with love of you.

Acts of Adoration and Reparation to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament

Profoundly I adore Thee, my Jesus hid beneath the mystic emblems; I acknowledge Thee very God and very man. Accept this act of adoration, by which I fain would make Thee reparation

for the cold hearts of so many of Thy people, who pass before Thy holy temples, nay, before Thy very Tabernacle, where hour after hour, Thou dost deign to dwell with loving impatience
to give Thyself to be Thy people's food, who yet do not ever bend the knee before Thee, their God; but like the Israelites in the wilderness, seem by their indifference, to loathe this bread of heaven. I offer Thee, then, Thine own most precious Blood, which Thou didst shed from the wound in Thy left foot, in reparation for this hateful coldness; and entering, in spirit, within this same wound, I cry aloud, in never-ending praise.

O Sacrament most holy! O Sacrament divine! All praise and all thanksgiving be every moment Thine.

(Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be)

Profoundly I adore Thee, my Jesus I acknowledge Thy presence in this most holy Sacrament. By this act of adoration, fain would I make amends for Thy people, so many of whom seem as though they know Thee not; but, while they see Thee go to the poor sick, to be their strength in the great journey to eternity, leave Thee unescorted and hardly give Thee one outward sign of homage. I offer Thee, in reparation for this coldness; Thine own most precious blood, which Thou didst shed from the wound in Thy right foot, and entering therein, in spirit, again I cry a thousand and thousand times:

O Sacrament most holy! O Sacrament divine! All praise and all thanksgiving be every moment Thine.

(Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be)

Profoundly I adore Thee, my Jesus, true bread of life eternal, and by this act of adoration, I fain would make Thee compensation, for all the wounds with which Thy Sacred Heart doth daily bleed to see the profanation of the churches wherein Thou dost vouchsafe to abide beneath the sacramental emblems, to receive the love and adoration of Thy people. I offer Thee in reparation for such great irreverence, Thine own most precious Blood, which Thou didst shed from the wound in Thy left hand, and entering therein, in spirit, I say at every moment:

O Sacrament most holy! O Sacrament divine! All praise and all thanksgiving be every moment thine.

(Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be)

Profoundly I adore Thee, my Jesus, living bread come down from heaven; and by the act of adoration, I fain would make amends for all the acts of irreverence which Thy people, day by day, commit in assisting at holy Mass, wherein Thou dost renew, though, bloodlessly, that self-same sacrifice which Thou didst consummate on Calvary for our salvation. I offer Thee, in reparation for all this ingratitude, Thine own most precious Blood, which thou didst shed from the wound in Thy right hand; and entering therein, in spirit I uplift my voice, and together with Thy holy angels, who stand around Thy throne, I say:

O Sacrament most holy! O Sacrament divine! All praise and all thanksgiving be every moment thine.

(Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be)

Profoundly I adore Thee, my Jesus, true victim of atonement for our sins; and I offer this act of adoration in compensation for the sacrilegious outrages which Thou dost receive from so many of Thy ungrateful people, who dare to draw nigh to Thee and to receive Thee in communion, with mortal sin upon their souls. In reparation for these hateful sacrileges I offer Thee last drops of Thy most precious Blood, which Thou didst shed from the wound of Thy most sacred side; and entering therein, in spirit, I adore Thee, I bless Thee, I love Thee, and with all the holy souls who love Thee in the most holy Sacrament, I exclaim:

O Sacrament most holy! O Sacrament divine! All praise and all thanksgiving be every moment thine.

(Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be)

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, animated with a desire to repair the outrages unceasingly offered to Thee, we prostrate before Thy throne of mercy, and in the name of all mankind, pledge our love and fidelity to Thee!

The more Thy mysteries are blasphemed, the more firmly we shall believe them, O Sacred Heart of Jesus!

The more impiety endeavors to extinguish our hopes of immortality, the more we shall trust in Thy Heart, sole hope of mankind!

The more hearts resist Thy Divine attractions, the more we shall love Thee, O infinitely amiable Heart of Jesus!

The more unbelief attacks Thy Divinity, the more humbly and profoundly we shall adore It, O Divine Heart of Jesus!

The more Thy holy laws are transgressed and ignored, the more we shall delight to observe them, O most holy Heart of Jesus!

The more Thy Sacraments are despised and abandoned, the more frequently we shall receive them with love and reverence, O most liberal Heart of Jesus!

The more the imitation of Thy virtues is neglected and forgotten, the more we shall endeavor to practice them, O Heart, model of every virtue!

The more the devil labors to destroy souls, the more we shall be inflamed with desire to save them, O Heart of Jesus, zealous Lover of souls!

The more sin and impurity destroy the image of God in man, the more we shall try by purity of life to be a living temple of the Holy Spirit, O Heart of Jesus!

The more Thy Holy Church is despised, the more we shall endeavor to be her faithful children, O Sweet Heart of Jesus!

The more Thy Vicar on earth is persecuted, the more will we honor him as the infallible head of Thy Holy Church, show our fidelity and pray for him, O kingly Heart of Jesus!

O Sacred Heart, through Thy powerful grace, may we become Thy apostles in the midst of a corrupted world, and by Thy crown in the kingdom of heaven. Amen.

Praise and adoration ever more be given to the most holy Sacrament!

To Jesus Abandoned

With Mary Immaculate, let us adore, thank, implore and console, the Most Beloved and Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.

O Divine Jesus, lonely tonight in so many Tabernacles, without visitor or worshipper I offer Thee my poor heart. May its every throb be an act of love for Thee. Thou art always watching beneath the Sacramental Veils; in Thy Love Thou dost never sleep and Thou art never weary of Thy vigil for sinners. O lonely Jesus, may the flame of my heart burn and beam always in company with Thee.

O Sacrament most holy, O Sacrament divine! All praise and all thanksgiving be every moment Thine!

O Divine Jesus

O Divine Jesus, lonely tonight in so many tabernacles, without visitor or worshiper, I offer Thee my poor, but loving heart. May its every beating be a prayer of love for Thee.

Thou art ever watching under the sacramental veils; in Thy love Thou never sleepest and art never weary of Thy vigil for sinners. O good Jesus, I love Thee; I am truly sorry for having offended Thee.

O lonely Jesus, may my heart be a lamp, the light of which shall burn and beam for Thee alone. Bless me, O Jesus, Come spiritually into my soul and fill my heart with love for Thee. Make me, Jesus, wholly Thine. Take this wayward heart of mine. Guide me through this vale of tears. Heart of Jesus, hear me.

When I draw my parting breath when my eyes shall close in death, then, sweet Jesus, be Thou near, Heart of Jesus, hear me. Watch, Sacramental Sentinel, watch for the weary world, for the erring soul, and for Thy poor lonely child.

To the Heart of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament

O sweet Jesus, let me lay at Thy sacred feet my daily share of joys, struggles, and sorrows, my hopes and fears, and do Thou in the stillness of Thy sanctuary, tenderly gather them into Thy Sacred Heart. Solace my doubts, calm my fears, and grant that day by day I may become more united to Thee.

O Heart of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, overflowing with gentleness, tenderness, and charity, I bury in the abyss of Thy Mercy all my iniquities and all my negligence. I offer Thee my labors and sufferings, my sorrows and my miseries; I recommend to Thee my life and my death.

A Prayer in Time of Trouble

O Sacred Heart of Jesus! make us remember, when the world is cold and dreary, and we know not where to turn for comfort, that there is always one spot bright and cheerful--the Sanctuary. When we are in desolation of spirit, when all who are dear to us have passed away, like summer flowers, and none are left to us and care for us, whisper to our troubled souls that there is one Friend who dies not, One Whose love never changes, the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the Altar.

When sorrows thicken and crush us with their burden, when we look in vain for comfort, let Thy dear words come forth with full force from the Tabernacle: "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will refresh you."

Would that we could realize the pure happiness of possessing Thy sympathy. Would that we could feel--when we are crushed and humbled, when the hope we have lived for has withered, when sorrows and trials that we dare not reveal to any, make our souls sink well nigh unto death, when we look in vain for someone to understand us, one who will enter into out miseries, make us remember that there in One on the Altar who knows every fibre of our hearts, every sorrow, every pain special to our peculiar natures, and Who deeply sympathizes with us.

Compassionate Heart of Jesus! our hearts crave for sympathy, and to suffer seems nothing to the bitterness of suffering alone.

Act of Confidence in the Sacred Heart of Jesus

O most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in You. Henceforth nothing will worry or disturb me.
I trust in You from morning till night, in joy and sorrow, in temptation and danger, in happiness and misfortune, in life and death, for time and for eternity. I trust in You at prayer and work, in success and failure, when asleep and awake, in tribulation and sadness; yes even in my sins and faults, I shall have an unshakeable confidence in You. You are the anchor of my hope, the guiding star of my earthly pilgrimage, the support of my weakness, the pardon of my sins, the strength of my virtues, the completion of my life, the consolation of my last hour, the joy and delight of my eternity.

O Sacred Heart, sweet joy and blessed peace, true rest and secure refuge of my soul, increase my confidence and perfect my hope in Your power and kindness. Even if I am the least of Your children and the last of Your servants, still I shall be great and perfect in trusting that You are my eternal happiness and salvation. This confidence is the only recommendation I have to offer You now and always, especially at the hour of my death. Amen.

To the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Divine Jesus, who has said, "Ask and you shall receive; seek and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened unto you" behold me prostrate at Your feet. Animated with a lively faith and confidence in these promises, dictated by Your Sacred Heart and pronounced by Your adorable lips, I come to ask (here mention the request.)

From whom shall I ask, O sweet Jesus, if not from You whose Heart is an inexhaustible source of all graces and merits? Where shall I seek, if not in the Treasure which contains all the riches of Your clemency and bounty? Where shall I knock, if it not be at the door of your Sacred Heart, through which God Himself comes to us and through which we go to God? To You then, O Heart of Jesus, I have recourse. In You I find consolation when afflicted, protection when persecuted, strength when overwhelmed with trials, and light in doubt and darkness. I firmly believe You can bestow upon me the grace I implore, even though it should require a miracle. You have only to will it and my prayer is granted. I own I am most unworthy of Your favors, O Jesus, but this is not a reason for me to be discouraged. You are the God of mercies and You will not refuse a contrite and humble heart. Cast upon me a look of pity, I conjure [beseech] You, and Your compassionate Heart will find in my miseries and weakness a pressing motive for granting my petition.

But, O Sacred Heart, whatever may be Your decision with regard to my request, I will never cease to adore, love, praise, and serve You. Deign, my Jesus, to accept this, my act of perfect submission to the decrees of Your adorable Heart, which I sincerely desire may be fulfilled in and by me and all Your creatures forever and ever. Amen.

A Prayer for Priests

O Jesus, Eternal Priest, keep Thy priests within the shelter of The Sacred Heart, where none may touch them.

Keep unstained their anointed hands, which daily touch Thy Sacred Body.

Keep unsullied their lips, daily purpled with Thy Precious Blood.

Keep pure and unworldly their hearts, sealed with the sublime mark of the priesthood.

Let Thy holy love surround them from the world's contagion.

Bless their labors with abundant fruit, and may the souls to whom they minister be their joy and consolation here and their everlasting crown hereafter. Amen.

Prayer for Those in Agony

O most merciful Jesus, lover of souls! I pray Thee, by the agony of Thy most Sacred Heart, and by the sorrows of Thy Immaculate Mother, cleanse in Thine own Blood the sinners of the world who are now in their agony and about to die this day. Amen.

Heart of Jesus, once in agony, pity the dying.

Daily Prayer for the Dying

O most merciful Jesus, Lover of souls, I pray Thee by the agony of Thy most Sacred Heart, and by the sorrows of Thy Immaculate Mother, cleanse in Thy Blood the sinners of the whole world who are now in their agony, and are to die this day. Amen.

Agonizing Heart of Jesus, have mercy on the dying.

The Blessing

O my Jesus, Fountain of inexhaustible benediction, Thou who didst bless the Apostles before Thou didst ascend into Heaven bless me also and with Thy Presence sanctify me.
Bless my memory that it may ever recollect Thee.
Bless my understanding that it may ever think of Thee.
Bless my will that it may never seek or desire that which may be displeasing to Thee.
Bless my body and all its actions.
Bless my heart with all its affections.
Bless me now and at the hour of my death.
Bless me in time and eternity, and grant that Thy most sweet blessing may be to me a pledge of eternal happiness.
Bless my brethren, the faithful.
Bless my dear ones.
Bless every one I love, and every one to whom I owe any gratitude, and bring and them to rest in Thy Sacred Heart forever.

The Last Word

Jesus, my God, my King, now I must leave You, but I carry away with me the memory of Your wounded love. It will not be long until I come to visit You again. Till then I leave my poor heart before the Tabernacle. Let its every beat tell You that I love You, and that I am longing to be free to spend another hour with You.
Bless me before I go, my Jesus. Bless my home and undertakings. Bless my friends, and my enemies too.

"Devotion to the Sacred Heart should bring us to a life of intimate union with Jesus who, we know, is truly present and living in the Eucharist. The two devotions — to the Sacred Heart and to the Eucharist—are closely connected. They call upon one another and, we may even say, they require one another. The Sacred Heart explains the mystery of the love of Jesus by which He becomes bread in order to nourish us with His substance, while in the Eucharist we have the real presence of this same Heart, living in our midst. It is wonderful to contemplate Jesus as the symbol of His infinite love, but it is even more wonderful to find Him always near us in the Sacrament of the altar. The Sacred Heart which we honor is not a dead person's heart which no longer palpitates, so that we have only the memory of him, but it is the Heart of a living Person, of One who lives eternally. He lives not only in heaven where His sacred humanity dwells in glory, but He lives also on earth wherever the Eucharist is reserved. In speaking of the Eucharist, Our Lord says to us, 'Behold, I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world' (Mt 28, 20). In Holy Communion, then, this Heart beats within us, it touches our heart; through the love of this Heart, we are fed with His Flesh and with His Blood, so that we may abide in Him and He in us." (From Divine Intimacy, by Fr. Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalen, O.C.D.)

Invocations to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Heart of Jesus, Who hast borne all our griefs * Strengthen me.

Heart of Jesus, Who hast weighed this sorrow before sending it to us * Help me.

Heart of Jesus, ever touched by the sight of sorrows * Pity me.

Heart of Jesus, beautiful in Thy sorrows, * Teach me to become holy by means of this affliction.

Heart of Jesus, spending Thyself for souls in the midst of Thy sorrows * Make me unselfish in bearing mine.

Heart of Jesus, troubled at the grave of Lazarus * Comfort those who mourn.

Heart of Jesus, touched with compassion at the widow's tears * Have pity on those who mourn.

Heart of Jesus, softened by the tears of Magdalen * Pity the sorrowful.

Heart of Jesus, whose sorrow was ever before Thee * Teach us to unite our griefs to Thine.

Heart of Jesus, agonized in Gethsemani * Strengthen us in all the sorrows of life. Heart of Jesus, whose unknown agonies * we shall know and love in Heaven * Teach us to suffer alone with God for His glory.

Heart of Jesus, broken with love and sorrow on the Cross * Draw us to Thyself in our sorrows, * and make us faithful in them to the end. Amen.

"Every time I hear anyone speak of the Sacred Heart of Jesus or of the Blessed Sacrament I feel an indescribable joy. It is as if a wave of precious memories, sweet affections and joyful hopes swept over my poor person, making me tremble with happiness and filling my soul with tenderness. These are loving appeals from Jesus who wants me wholeheartedly there, at the source of all goodness, his Sacred Heart, throbbing mysteriously behind the Eucharistic veils... I love to repeat today 'Sweet Heart of my Jesus, make me love You more and more.'" (Pope John XXIII, Journal of a Soul)

Hymns

Jesus, My Lord, My God

1--Jesus, My Lord, My God, my All,
How can I love Thee as I ought?
And how revere this wondrous gift,
So far surpassing hope and thought?

Chorus--Sweet Sacrament! we Thee adore,
O make us love Thee more and more,
O make us love Thee more and more.

2--Had I but Mary's sinless Heart,
To love Thee with, my dearest King,
O with what bursts of fervent praise,
Thy goodness, Jesus, would I sing.

Jesus, the Very Thought

1—Jesus, the very thought of Thee
With rapture fills my breast;
But sweeter far in Thy face to see,
and in Thy presence rest.
No voice can sing, no heart can frame,
Nor can the mem'ry find
A sweeter sound than Thy blest Name,
O Savior of mankind!

2---O hope of ev'ry contrite heart
O joy of all the meek,
To those who fall how kind Thou art,
How good to those who seek.
But what of those who find? Ah! this
Nor tongue nor pen can show;
The love of Jesus what it is
None but His loved ones know.

O Sacred Heart! O Love Divine

1—O Sacred Heart! O Love Divine!
Do keep us near to Thee;
And make our love so like to Thine
That we may holy be.

Heart of Jesus hear!
O Heart of Love Divine!
Listen to our prayer;
Make us always Thine.

2—O Temple Pure! O House of Gold!
Our heaven here below!
What sweet delights, what wealth untold,
From Thee do ever flow.

Heart of Jesus, We Are Grateful

1 — Heart of Jesus, we are grateful
For Thy answer to our pray'r;
We have sought Thee, ever hopeful
That Thy blessings we might share;
Thou hast heard us interceding,
With Thy love which is untold.
And in answer to our pleading
All thy treasures dost unfold.

Chorus— Heart of Jesus, we will thank Thee,
We will love Thee more and more;
Heart of Jesus, we will praise Thee,
And we'll thank Thee o'er and o'er.

2—Heart of Jesus, Thou hast taught us
How to seek and how to find,
And that lesson now has brought us
To Thy Heart so sweet and kind.
What we ask, with faith believing,
Thou hast pledged Thy word to give,
And Thy word is not deceiving,
But the truth by which we live.

O! What Could My Jesus Do More

—1—

O! what could my Jesus do more,
Or what greater blessings impart,
O silence my soul and adore,
And press Him still nearer thy heart.
'Tis here from my labor I'll rest,
Since He makes my poor heart His abode.
To Him all my cares I'll address,
And speak to the heart of my God.

—2—

In life and in death Thou art mine,
My Saviour, I'm sealed with Thy blood.
Till eternity on me doth shrine,
I'll live on the flesh of my God.
In Jesus triumphant I'll live,
In Jesus triumphant I'll die.
The terrors of death calmly brave,
In His bosom breathe out my last sigh.

Peace Be Still! Our God Is Dwelling

—1—

Peace be still! our God is dwelling
Silent on His altar throne;
Let us kneel, our bosoms swelling,
With a joy but seldom known.
Heart of Jesus! come we hither,
With our burdens meekly in
From a world where spirits wither,
From a world whose breath is sin.

Chorus—Heart of Jesus! strength supernal,
Send us power from above;
Heart of Jesus! light eternal,
Fill our souls with light and love!

—2—

Thou hast called the heavy laden,
Called the poor, the frail to Thee
See us then, O Son of Maiden!
None could poorer, frailer be
Thou dost know the woes and weakness
Of a nature prone to ill.
Heart of mercy! Heart of meekness,
Be our shield, our succour still!

To Jesus Heart All Burning

1—To Jesus' Heart all burning
With fervent love for men,
My heart with fondest yearning
Shall raise the joyful strain.

Chorus—While ages course along,
Blest with loudest song
The Sacred Heart of Jesus
By ev'ry heart and tongue,
The Sacred Heart of Jesus
By ev'ry heart and tongue.

2—O Heart for me on fire,
With love no man can speak,
My yet untold desire,
God gives me for Thy sake.

3—Too true I have forsaken
Thy flock by willful sin,
Yet now let me be taken
Back to Thy fold again.

To Jesus in the Holy Eucharist

O Jesus, hidden God, I cry out to Thee!

O Jesus, hidden Light, I turn to Thee!

O Jesus, hidden Love, I run to Thee!

With all the strength I have, I worship Thee;
With all the love I have, I cling to Thee;
With all my soul, I long to be with Thee;
And fear no more to fail, or fall from Thee.

O Jesus, deathless Love, who seekest me,
Thou, who didst die for longing love of me,
Thou, King in all Thy beauty, come to me,
And go no more, dear Lord, away from me.

O God, most beautiful, most priceless One;
O God, most glorious, Uncreated One;
O God, Eternal, Beatific One;
O God, O Infinite and Hidden One;
O God, Immense, O God, the Living One;
Thou Wisdom of the Everlasting One;
Thou, ever Loved and ever-loving One.

Make me, O holy God, Thy treasured one;
Make me, O glorious Love, Thy precious one;
Make me, O highest Good, Thy longing one;
Make me, O blessed Light, Thy chosen one;
Make me, for evermore, Thy loving one.

My soul is dark, away from Thee, my own;
My eyes are dim in seeking Thee, my own;
My flesh doth pine, away from Thee, my own;
My heart leaps up with joy to Thee, my own;
My spirit faints receiving Thee, my own.

Where, in the height of Heaven, is Light like Thee?
Where, in the breadth of Heaven, is bliss like Thee?
Where, in the depth of Heaven, is peace like Thee?
Where in the home of love, is Love like Thee?

With all my heart I give myself to Thee,
And waiting wait, O King and Spouse,
for Thee,
Til I am one for evermore with Thee.

O sweetest Jesus, bring me home to Thee;
Free me, O dearest God, from all but Thee;
And break all chains that keep me back from Thee;
Call me, O thrilling Love, I follow Thee;
Thou art my all, and I have nought for Thee.

O hidden Love, Who now art loving me;
O wounded Love, Who once was dead for me;
O sun-crowned Love, Who art alive for me;
O patient Love, Who weariest not of me;
Alone of all, Thou weariest not of me;
O bear with me, till I am lost in Thee,
O bear with me, till I am found in Thee.
